Quote van de week

"En als God had gewild dat dit lijf gevoed zou worden met louter paprika’s en wortels nou, dan had ‘ie wel een konijn van me gemaakt!"

"Sleeping in a bus makes you feel like a hobo"

That's a quote from Isobel Campbell (ex-Belle and Sebastian). I saw her and Mr. Razorblade Voice himself, Mark Lanegan, last week in the Ancienne Belgique in Brussels, performing songs from their third and latest cooperative album Hawk.
The Beauty and the Beast-act they started on Ballad of the Broken Seas and continued on Sunday at Devil Dirt is still working for them, although you could definitely tell last week there's some tension between the both of them. And maybe that's not such a bad thing.

I'll admit, the concert was a little whimsical, or better put precarious. But for me that's part of the charm. The first songs were from Hawk, and thank god they're not so etheric like the two previous albums. I like me some dirty blues! Of course Lanegan was being his 'talkative' self, which means he was just standing there in the nearly dark, holding his microphone standard in the same manner he always does, and not interacting to the band or the crowd in any way. He did rise his hand though, twice (!) if I'm not mistaken. Doesn't matter, I love him no matter what. If he just wants to sing, that's fine by me.

Campbell on the other hand was as nervous and shy as ever, and to me it felt like Lanegans attitude only made it worse for her. In the middle of the show Lanegan disappeared and Willy Mason (who opened for them) took his place. All of a sudden Campbell relaxed and introduced the band, and started talking. Even though the songs with Mason sounded a little unrehearsed, the guy still has a great voice. But he's no Lanegan.

After two Campbell solo-songs, Mark returned. And so did the magic. It was effing hot in there, but the fairytale duo still managed to give me chills. I think Mark Lanegan would give everybody chills. Campbell shouldn't be afraid of his cold shoulder on stage. Maybe next time she just needs to wear a scarf or whatever.

And here's the clip for Hawk's first single "You Won't Let Me Down Again". No Mark in sight, obviously.
